Baldness is a condition where there is no hair in the area where it grows, usually on the head and occurs in both human beings and animals.  Men are more likely to become bald compared to women. The hair on the head gradually becomes thinner and then completely reduces.

The incidence of baldness varies from country to country and depends on the genetic makeup of the population. Male pattern baldness is characterized by hair receding from the lateral side of the forehead and is visible in the mid twenties.

While hereditary factors play an important role, some of the other causes of baldness are:
1. Pulling the hair with force, while tying it in ponytails or cornrows
2. Chemotherapy for treatment of cancer or other ailment.
3. Stress
4. Major surgery
5. Poisoning
6. Iron deficiency
